Project 2:
Pinkie’s Promise multi-purpose court (Ikaya Primary)
Partners: PwC Stellenbosch, Stellenbosch FC
Benefits: Artificial multi-purpose sports and recreation facility, coaching support from Open Play’s Kayamandi Community Coaches Programme
Beneficiary information: Ikaya Primary School is the largest public primary school in Kayamandi. It has just more than 2,000 students from Grade R to Grade 7. The school is renowned for its achievements in sports, including excelling at chess, athletics, gymnastics, boxing (having produced national junior champions) and especially, Indigenous Games. In the latter, Ikaya is regularly crowned provincial champion, competing for national honours as well. These achievements are remarkable considering the school’s lack of sports infrastructure. Their Open Play facility is named in honour of Pinkie Yolisa, Ikaya’s passionate Head of Sport, who made Open Play promise that we would also invest in the future and wellbeing of their learners. She didn’t give us much choice or time.
Installed: March 2024 (Belgotex Somerset West)
Investment value: R155,000
Infrastructure owner: Ikaya Primary School/Western Cape Government

Beneficiary information: Pieter Langeveldt Primêr is a primary school with 1,050 learners. It is located in Cloetesville, a community facing numerous socio-economic challenges, including gang-related incidents and trauma. Extracurricular activities, particularly in sport, are central to the school’s objective to provide a holistic education. The principal, Shafiek (Fiekie) Jacobs, and his staff are dedicated to providing quality education and fostering a supportive environment for its learners. The school offers 16 sports codes, including athletics, cricket, mini-cricket, softball, cross-country running, soccer, rugby, netball, hockey, mini-rugby, golf, volleyball, table tennis, chess and drum majorettes (“trompoppies”). Before the installation, the school had to make do with a derelict concrete slab with faded netball markings. The facility is named after its principal and Open Play’s commitment to providing communities with Building blocks of HOPE (Healthy Outcomes from Positive Experiences).
